As researchers exploring unknown areas, you expect the unexpected. But, even for the seasoned scientific explorer, Week Two offered some giant surprises. The discovery of huge active hydrothermal plumes and recently erupted lava, caused jaws to hit the floor on R/V Falkor.

After difficult conditions and a lack of hydrothermal activity in the first few days Co-Chief scientist Bill Chadwick was getting nervous… “You can’t help but think ‘What if we don’t find anything?’’ But he need not have worried. The plume discoveries are multiplying and the list of interesting targets for the ROV next year is growing by the day. Bill is back to his optimistic self ‘It just makes me wonder what we are going to find tomorrow!”

Join the team onboard R/V Falkor for a review of Hydrothermal Hunt highlights, Week Two.
