Prof. Dr. Pedro Martinez Arbizu is the director of the Institute Senckenberg am Meer in Wilhelmshaven and Professor for Marine Biodiversity at the University of Oldenburg in Germany since 2001. Previously he had been Professor of Zoology at the University of Paraná in Curitiba Brazil.
Prof. Martinez Arbizu is an expert in ecology, taxonomy and systematics of meiofauna organisms, specifically benthic copepods. He studied deep-sea meiofauna from polymetallic nodules provinces, cold seeps and hot vents, and the Arctic and Antarctic Oceans. He applies molecular methods to study the genetic connectivity of Meiofauna and Macrofauna in the Abyssal Plains.
Prof. Martinez Arbizu was the co-leader of the Census of Abyssal marine life in the context of the Census of Marine life program (2000-2010). He is the editor in Chief of the journal Marine Biodiversity (Springer).
He has a biology diploma and Ph.D. in ‘Phylogeny of Copepod’ at the University of Oldenburg.
