Nicole is a PhD candidate at Stanford University, studying oceanography under the guidance of Dr. Karen Casciotti. She is interested in marine nitrogen cycling, stemming from previous work in algal biofuel production and from studying ecological impacts of wastewater treatment plants. Her current projects investigate how algae and nitrifying microbes in the upper ocean leave behind distinct nitrogen chemistries.
Aboard the R/V Falkor, Nicole will help field-test newly developed in situ incubators for making nitrogen-cycling measurements in oxygen-deficient waters in the Eastern Tropical North Pacific Ocean. Nicole will also use deck incubators to measure nitrite-cycling in the surface ocean near the ubiquitous primary nitrite maximum.
Nicole received her B.S. from Brown University in Environmental Science and Ecology and her M.S. in Marine Biology from San Francisco State University at the Estuary and Ocean Science Center.
