Nick Goumas is a senior research engineer at the Deep Robot Optical Perception (DROP) lab at the University of Michigan. He supports the development of autonomous underwater vehicles with a focus on underwater vision systems. With a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, his primary expertise is the mechanical design of underwater robotics. He also assists with software, electrical and systems engineering when necessary.
He began his career as a mechanical engineer in an acoustics research lab. There he assisted in the research, development, and prototyping of underwater communication systems and naval countermeasures. Later he joined an autonomous underwater vehicle manufacturer as a design engineer. His AUV experience includes design and manufacturing as well as mission planning and field operations.
