Américo Montiel San Martín is a biologist from the Universidad de Magallanes, with 28 years of professional experience researching marine ecology in Antarctic and sub-Antarctic areas, with special emphasis on biodiversity and taxonomy of polychaetes. In 2005, Dr. Montiel obtained his PhD at the University of Bremen (Germany) with a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

He has participated in numerous international scientific expeditions sailing aboard the R/V Polarstern in the Antarctic waters of the Weddell Sea, Bransfield Strait and Scotia Arc Sea. On the other hand, he has organized and participated in several national expeditions to Patagonian fjords and channels waters. Also, aboard the R/V Sonne, he has participated in expeditions to study benthic upwelling ecosystems in northern Chile. Some of his results have allowed him to describe several species new to science and to write numerous scientific articles and book chapters.

Dr. Montiel is a former director of the Chilean Society of Marine Sciences. He is currently the editor of the scientific journal Anales del Instituto de la Patagonia and guest editor of the special issue of the journal Diversity.

As a biologist I love field work, which I transmit to my students in classes taught in undergraduate and graduate courses at the University of Magallanes. I have guided and participated in numerous national and international research projects, both in cooperation with the Catholic University of Valparaíso (Chile), University of Valparaíso, University of Los Lagos, Alfred Wegener Institute, Max Planck Institute (Germany), Ciencias del Mar-CSIC (Spain), British Antarctic Institute (Chile) and the University of Chile (Chile).”
