The Nippon Foundation – GEBCO Alumni Conference, Tokyo

Approximately 140 attendees gathered in Tokyo, Japan, in early August for the first Nippon Foundation – GEBCO Alumni Conference. The conference’s goal was to discuss problems and solutions around quickly and efficiently mapping the seafloor to scale.

The conference theme was Connecting Our Ocean, with a secondary goal of strengthening the international Alumni network, all of whom went through a year-long training program in hydrography at the University of New Hampshire. The training program is now in its 20th year and has 120 Alumni from 50 countries. Alums have all remained in the fields of oceanography or hydrography. Positions alumni occupy globally include Naval Commanders, Heads of Hydrographic Offices, Professors teaching the next generation in seafloor mapping,  Mapping Technologists, and Business Owners.

This year marks the 120-year anniversary of the instigation of the General Bathymetric Chart of the Ocean (GEBCO). To mark the occasion, guest speakers were invited, in addition to alums. One of the guest speakers was Dr. Jyotika Virmani, who spoke on a panel about the latest developments in technology, ranging from autonomous and remote technologies for mapping the seafloor to sensing technologies in space and under the sea surface.
