In Kupe’s Wake

Schmidt Ocean Institute, in collaboration with NOAA’s Office of Exploration and the Ocean Exploration Trust, worked alongside a group of traditional knowledge holders, educators, and community leaders in the Pacific Islands, to gather advice on how to best work with and serve their communities when research vessels are operating in Pacific waters. Their recommendations on how to respectfully work and engage in co-design in the Pacific Islands are compiled in Kupe’s Wake Recommendations Report. They will guide all our organization’s efforts in these regions. A few of the recommendations include:

  1. Weaving appropriate protocol and ceremony into expeditions;
  2. Ensuring science questions address local community needs; with consideration of equity in the proposed exploration activities;
  3. Building trust by asking how to contribute to a community’s well-being and seeking to co-develop research exploration activities when possible.
