Haunani Kane, a native of Kailua, Oahu is currently pursuing a PhD in Geology and Geophysics at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Haunani uses cores taken from fossil reefs, sandy coastal plains, and wetlands to reconstruct the evolution of Pacific Islands in response to changes in past sea-level. Most reef islands across the Pacific are relatively young, and their formation and evolution is believed to be directly related to changes in sea-level. Improving our understanding of the processes that have shaped and formed these low lying islands, may contribute to better understandings of how islands and islanders may be impacted by future sea-level rise.
Although the majority of Haunani’s research has largely focused upon the coastal zone, she is excited to venture out into the deep sea and learn more about reconstructing an island’s sea level history from drowned coral reefs.
