Those of us at Schmidt Ocean Institute, along with many in the scientific community, awakened to sad news on Saturday.
Nereus, the only active vehicle capable of exploring the deepest parts of our oceans, was lost during a mission in the Kermadec Trench northeast of New Zealand. Our condolences go out to Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), which developed Nereus, a hybrid remotely operated vehicle, and to all of the hardworking technicians, engineers, scientists and others who have been involved with this world-leading program.
