Yanwu Zhang is a Senior Research Specialist at Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, working on designing targeted sampling algorithms for autonomous underwater and surface vehicles, and applying them in scientific experiments. He received his Ph.D. degree in Oceanographic Engineering from the MIT/WHOI Joint Program in 2000. He was a finalist for the MIT Technology Review Magazine’s 100 young innovators (TR100) in 1999. He has participated in 15 field experiments running the Odyssey IIB, Dorado, and Tethys-class AUVs. He has served as a reviewer for IEEE Journal of Oceanic Engineering and 15 other academic journals, as well as for National Science Foundation (NSF), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and European research proposals. He was an invited session chair at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meetings and the MTS/IEEE Oceans Conferences. Dr. Zhang is a Senior Member of IEEE and a member of Sigma Xi.
