Dr. Sheryl Murdock is a postdoctoral researcher at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences where she currently studies the role of microbes in nitrous oxide cycling in marine oxygen minimum zones. She is a microbial ecologist who dabbles in geochemistry and studies various aspects of microbial involvement in ecosystems, ranging from nutrient and elemental cycling to species interactions. She uses a combination of incubation experiments to track microbial production and consumption of elements like nitrogen along with microbial genomics to link these processes to the relevant genes and organisms. She is interested in identifying important ecosystem functions of microbes to better inform strategies for the protection and management of marine ecosystems.
