Rachel Kaplan is a PhD candidate at Oregon State University, studying Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences. She is interested in how marine animal distribution and behavior intersect with human use of the oceans, and how understanding these interactions can inform management and conservation efforts. Much of her research centers on predator-prey relationships between baleen whales and the shrimp-like zooplankton krill, off the west coast of the United States and in the Western Antarctic Peninsula region. Rachel has spent 22 months living at sea and at remote field stations in Alaska and Antarctica, and she has worked as a science communication specialist to make ocean and earth sciences research broadly accessible. She is the recipient of the Antarctic Service Medal and the National Science Foundation’s Graduate Research Fellowship.
