Monika is a M.Sc student in the Department of Oceanography at Dalhousie University, supervised by Dr. Anna Metaxas. Monika’s research focuses on characterizing non-vent animal communities at deep-sea hydrothermal vents using video annotation tools. She is interested in understanding what drives the distribution and abundance of species on inactive substrates surrounding vents. She hopes that her research will inform more sustainable ocean use and marine spatial planning, ultimately preserving the remote wonders of the deep sea.

Monika received a B.Sc Honours in Marine Biology from Dalhousie University in 2021. During an internship at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences, she participated in a Hydrostation-S research cruise aboard the R/V Atlantic Explorer. Monika is excited to be returning to sea with the Schmidt Ocean Institute on board the R/V Falkor (too).
