Monica is a postdoctoral fellow within the Marine Geology and Seafloor Surveying Group at the University of Malta. Her research focuses on geohazards, emphasizing the integration of onshore and offshore datasets. She uses digital topography tools for detailed geomorphological mapping of subaerial and marine environments. Her work investigates markers for landscape development, especially following significant events like earthquakes.

Monica’s background is in onshore geology. She joined the research group in Malta in 2021 as a Marie Curie fellow, spending half her time at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel in Germany. Previously she was awarded the Deane Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Toronto, Canada, worked as search assistant at the University of Bari, Italy, and earned her PhD from Lincoln University, New Zealand. Her thesis focused on the sedimentological aspects of liquefaction features affecting the Canterrbury Plains during the 2010-2012 Canterbury Earthquake Sequence. She holds an M. Sc and B.Sc in Earth and Environmental Sciences from Sapienza University of Rome.

Monica has extensive field experience, working at the outcrop scale, in trenches, and on offshore campaigns. In previous offshore campaigns she worked either as part of the coring team or in the hydroacoustic laboratory. Additionally, she has led two hydrographic surveys in Malta to support her research on satellite derived bathymetry for the Maltese Archipelago. In this cruise, she will work as part of the Hydroacoustic team to acquire and process bathymetric data.
