Logan is a graduate student at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego (UCSD). His research focuses on the influence of high hydrostatic pressure on the microbial life present in the deep ocean. It is hypothesized that these communities are piezophilic, adapted to the in situ pressures found in these extreme environments. His current work uses single cell genomics to characterize the genomes of unculturable microbes inhabiting the deepest ocean trenches. During his time aboard the R/VFalkor, Logan will evaluate the response of the microbes found in the Mariana Trench to changes in hydrostatic pressure using culturing, single cell activity assays, and a pressure retaining sampler.
