Johanna Gutleben is a marine microbial ecologist, currently working as a postdoctoral researcher in the group of Paul Jensen at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, San Diego. Her research focuses on deep ocean microbial communities and their bioactive potential, as well as their relationships with various marine invertebrate animals. She completed her Masters and Ph.D. degrees at Wageningen University, The Netherlands, where she investigated ecological and biotechnological aspects of sponge-associated microorganisms. In Johanna’s current project, she expands her research to mostly unexplored deep sea habitats, aiming to describe the ecological processes shaping microbial and animal communities thriving in these dark depths. Thus far, she joined several sample collection trips in The Netherlands, Spain, and Indonesia.
