Jessica Chen is currently a Ph.D. student at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She works at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology in the Marine Mammal Research Program.  She moved to Hawaii for graduate school after receiving a B.A. in Behavioral Biology from Johns Hopkins University.  Though spending most of her life in Colorado, Jessica has nurtured a fascination with sea life.  She is now studying humpback whale songs along the Hawaiian Island chain, song occurrence around Kauai, and mother-calf communications.  She has also worked on projects studying odontocete distribution in Hawaiian waters and soundscapes near Pearl Harbor.  On Falkor, Jessica is the Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) lead, in charge of making sure the MMO operations run smoothly.  Observers will be looking for whales, making behavioral observations, and taking pictures for photo identification of animals.
