Javier Sellanes is a Full Professor at the Department of Marine Biology at the Faculty of Marine Sciences, Universidad Católica del Norte (FCM-UCN), Chile, and an Associate Researcher at the Center for Ecology and Sustainable Management of Oceanic Islands. He is also the Director of the Aquarium and Museum at FCM-UCN, and its associated Biological Collections Room (SCBUCN).
His research mainly focuses on deep-sea benthic ecology and the taxonomy of mollusks. During his research career, his target benthic habitats have moved from the SE Pacific Oxygen Minimum Zone, studying its meiobenthic component, the exploration and ecological characterization of bathyal methane-seep habitats along the Chilean margin, and currently seamounts and mesophotic habitats of oceanic islands of the Nazca, Salas & Gomez, and Juan Fernández Ridges.
Javier received his Degree in Aquatic Biology from Universidad de la República, in his native country, Uruguay, and his PhD in Oceanography at Universidad de Concepción, Chile. He has participated in several national and international cruises, and the present one is a key milestone of the project “Oceanic Biodiversity Under Climate Change Thtreat (BiodUCCT)”, of which he is the Director, funded by the National Agency for Research and Development (ANID, Project ATE 220044).
Javier Sellanes was the Chief Scientist on the Seamounts of the Southeast Pacific expedition.
