Eulogio Soto Oyarzún is a Full Professor at Marine Science and Natural Resources Faculty, Universidad de Valparaíso, Chile, and Director of Marine Observation Center for Observation and Analysis of the Coastal Ocean (COSTAR). He also participates in Deep Ocean Stewardship Initiative (DOSI) for Minerals and BBNJ Working Groups; Global Ocean Biodiversity Initiative (GOBI), Ocean Census, Challenger 150 Program (SE Pacific Working group co-lead) and Proplayas network.
His research mainly focuses on coastal and deep-sea benthic ecology, biodiversity and taxonomy; macrobenthic communities and sediment biogeochemistry. During his career, he has carried out studies in abyssal plains (NE Atlantic), seamounts, continental margin, abyssal plains and Atacama trench in the SE Pacific; fjords and channels system in the Chilean Patagonia and, rocky-shore and sandy beach in several countries of SouthAmerica.
Eulogio Soto born in Castro, Chiloé island, southern Chile and, he is Marine Biologist from Universidad de Valparaíso and, PhD in Marine Biology and Oceanography at National Oceanography Centre, University of Southampton and The Natural History Museum, London, UK. He has participated in several national and international cruises, and he currently is principal investigator in the projects: Biodiversity on the Margins An Integrated Exploration and Characterization of Chemosynthetic Habitats & Deep-Sea Canyons along the Chilean Subduction Zone and Interdisciplinary investigations of remote polar environments: Exploring new frontiers of Antarctic biodiversity and ice-ocean interactions to be carried out during 2024 onboard Falkor (too)
