Dr. Erin Bethell is a research associate with the Metal Oceans team led by Dr. Mark Hannington at the University of Ottawa. Erin is also the coordinator of iMAGE-CREATE, a marine geodynamics and georesources training platform for early career geoscientists funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC)’s Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE) program.

Erin is interested in understanding large-scale tectonic and magmatic processes and the interplay between them. She has a background in geological mapping and interpretation using remote sensing data. Her PhD, completed in 2021, focused on mapping the geology of Venus using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery. Her current work, within the scope of Metal Oceans, is targeted towards using the knowledge gained from remote geological mapping of the Earth’s seafloor to better understand how geological processes operated during the Archean Eon.
