Mark Merrifield holds the inaugural position of the University of California San Diego’s Presidential Endowed Chair in Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation. He pursues research that advances the understanding of climate impacts and provides meaningful projects to develop a focused curriculum that prepares the next generation of scientists, engineers, and policymakers in risk assessment and adaptation strategies. Prior to joining Scripps, Dr. Merrifield spent twenty years as the Director of the University of Hawaii’s Sea Level Center. He has a track record of applying science to real-world societal problems and working with partners in academia, industry, government, and non-government organizations. He is an internationally recognized researcher in the areas of sea-level rise and climate stability, coastal oceanography, and nearshore processes and was the lead author on the Sea Level Change chapter of the fifth assessment report of the IPCC.
