Daan Speth is a postdoc at Caltech, working on the microbial communities in diverse extreme environments. He applies a mix of bioinformatics and wet lab methods to gain insight in the role of microbes in the environment. Prior to his work at Caltech, Daan obtained his Ph.D. from the Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands, where he used molecular methods to characterize the microbial communities in nitrogen cycling, focusing on anaerobic ammonium oxidizing organisms.
Daan was a participant on the 2017 E/V Nautilus cruise to Pescadero Basin, and is excited to revisit the site and apply the knowledge gained from this previous visit to further our understanding of the microbes of Pescadero Basin during this cruise.
