Charles Lapointe is a graduate student and member of the Jamieson Marine Geology Laboratory at Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John’s, Canada. His M.Sc. project focuses on the geology of seafloor hydrothermal systems and the mapping of associated deposits. To this end, he applies a variety of mineralogical, geochemical, and geochronological tools to rock samples collected from the seafloor by remotely-operated vehicle. The results of this work will provide further insight into the formation of hydrothermal sulfide deposits and the nature of the oceanic crust beneath.
Charles previously completed a B.Sc. in Earth & Planetary Sciences from McGill University, Montreal, in 2022. He is particularly passionate about remote exploration and the ways rock samples can be used to understand large-scale processes, from the Earth’s deep seafloor to other planets in the solar system.
