Dr. Angelika Brandt works on taxonomy and systematics, ecology, and evolution of deep-sea and polar organisms with a focus on isopod crustaceans. In recent years, her research interest has concentrated on the identification of drivers of evolution in the deep sea, such as connectivity, dispersal barriers, as well as on advancing deep-sea sampling methodologies.

Angelika Brandt’s awards include the International Prize for Biology in 2024 (JSPS), the Carlo Heip Excellence Award in Marine Biodiversity 2022 (IABO), ther ecognition as outstanding female Antarctic researcher (Wikipedia biography), the SCAR Medal for excellences in Polar Sciences in July 2008 in St. Petersburg, Adventurer of the Year 2007 by the National Geographic Society and the ANDEEP publication (Nature, 2007) designated “one of the 10 mostimportant scientific results of the year 2007” by the TIME MAGAZINE, since 2003 she is Fellow of the Linnean Society

In 1995, Angelika Brandt became Professor for Zoology at the University of Hamburg and Curator for Crustacea and Polychaeta. From 2004 to 2009, she was the Head of the Zoological Museum of the University of Hamburg. In 2017, she became Professor for Marine Zoology at the Goethe University Frankfurt and at the Senckenberg Research Institute and Natural History Museum, she has served as the Head of Department “Marine Zoology” since then.
