André Van Tonder is an ardent natural scientist, having graduated from the Department of Zoology and Entomology at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. He studied the food webs around the sub-Antarctic Prince Edward Islands, where he also overwintered from 2017 to 2018. His field experience extends to the Antarctic, including handling of wild ice seals for logger deployment and scientific sampling in the Weddell Sea in 2022/23 and 2019. Since completing a Masters in Science, he has been conducting independent contract work, mainly focusing on bird surveys to support the environmental impact assessments required for South Africa’s significant push to renewable energy. Additionally, he is coordinating a study with the Conservation Ecology Research Unit to assess if changes in millipede communities in restoring dune forests can be explained by feeding requirements.
