Alana Sherman serves as the Electrical Engineering Group Leader at MBARI. Alana has been working at MBARI since 2003. Over that time, she has worked on a variety of scientific instruments and underwater vehicles. Included in that group are: the Benthic Rover, a seafloor rover that transects the abyssal plane autonomously for up to a year, the MiniROV, a multi-purpose fly-away ROV, and the AUV Gulper, a water sampler for sampling thin layers from an autonomous platform. In addition to engineering development, Alana manages a group of nine electrical engineers. Prior to coming to MBARI, Alana earned a B.A. in Mathematics at University of California, Santa Cruz, and a M.S. in Mechanical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Bioengineering both from the University of California, Berkeley.
