Network

R/V Falkor (too) has several networks. The network “backbone” is 10Gbps fiber and branch cabling is copper. Custom VLANs may be configured or physical networks built, when necessary.

Satellite communication is available that covers all operational, science, personal, and outreach needs.

Data Cabling

Generally, LAN drops can carry routable traffic or may be configured to allow for use carrying serial or other types of data. Some areas are served by 10Gbps fiber. WiFi is available inside and outside in most areas of the ship.

Digital Matrix

R/V Falkor (too) has a “Digital Matrix” system that allows most of the key science systems to be displayed and controlled from multiple locations around the ship, including the bridge. This allows for customization of the system and monitor layout in the Science Control Room, distributed use of systems to avoid congestion in high-use areas and monitoring of operations from the bridge. An auxiliary port is typically available for science-party use.

Adding External Instrumentation

Dedicated instrumentation utility drops are provided in locations around the ship including the main mast, foremast, bow, bridge top, and several back deck locations.

The instrumentation utility boxes, in the locations listed above, include the following:

  • US power (110V, 60Hz, clean)
  • European power (220V, 50Hz, Clean)
  • 12V DC power
  • 24V DC power
  • Serial data drops/feeds with connection to the laboratories
  • Ethernet data drops/feeds with connection to the laboratories
