Dynamics of Sinking Microplastics

Spirits of Science with Pei-Wen Jin and Shan Hua | Artists-at-Sea

Aug. 11 2023

The fashion industry is one of the major sources of microplastic in the Oceans, notably with by-products that come from materials such as polyester. Pei-Wen Jin and Shan Hua are Artist-at-Sea participants during the #MicroplasticDynamics expedition, working alongside researchers on R/V Falkor (too) as part of Ocean Rising.

This initiative launched by the Schmidt Ocean Institute and Nekton aims to deepen people’s relationship with the Ocean. By galvanizing connections of major sectors of global culture (one of which is fashion) to the undersea world, #OceanRising aims to foster a new generation of Ocean ambassadors who create tangible initiatives that improve the health of Ocean ecosystems. Hear from the two artists as they discuss being at sea and learning about the science behind microplastics.
