SOI Artist-at-Sea Continues to Spotlight Mesophotic Corals Down Under
Past Artist-at-Sea Ellie Hannon and multimedia correspondent Conor Ashleigh debuted an immersive installation of paintings, short films, and ceramics at the Half-light exhibit at the Maitland Regional Art Gallery in NSW, Australia, from October to December 2022. The exhibit was based on their time on R/V Falkor during the 2021 Australian Mesophotic Coral Examination expedition. Half-light takes a subsurface plunge, offering sight into natural spaces that the public is unlikely to visit. One of Ellie’s vibrant, semi-abstract pieces, Ashmore Reef (2021), was promoted as a feature work in SOI’s 2022 Artist-at-Sea traveling exhibit at the Explorer’s Club in New York, U.S. and the Ciencia Viva Museum in Lisbon, Portugal
