Associate Professor at Museu Nacional (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro – UFRJ) since 2014, Adjunct Professor between 1997 and 2014

Eduardo Hajdu has directed his research towards taxonomy, phylogeny, biogeography and bioprospection of sponges (Porifera), with main focal areas off Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru and the Antarctic. He is particularly keen to understand the historical relations between sponge faunas at these austral oceanic crossroads, from the shallows, to the very deep zones.

Eduardo has co-authored over 200 publications which include the description of over 200 species and higher taxa of Porifera. He is an editor of the scientific periodical Zootaxa since 2006, and an editor of the World Porifera Database since 2008.

Eduardo received his B.Sc. (Hon.) in Biology from UFRJ, and his M.Sc. in Biology from the University of São Paulo (USP), both in Brazil. His PhD was obtained from the University of Amsterdam (The Netherlands), and he conducted a postdoctoral internship at USP. He has conducted extensive faunistic inventory all along Brazil, Chile and Peru’s coastlines, but also in the Antarctic, Argentina, Curaçao and Panamá. He is curator of the MNRJ collection of sponges, with over 30.000 specimens, mostly preserved in EtOH, including 1500+ criopreserved subsamples. This Uruguayan Submarine Canyons survey will be his second research cruise, and he is looking forward to spot not just new species, but also sponge gardens.
