Federico Mas is a marine scientist specializing in the ecology, diversity, and conservation of chondrichthyans (sharks, rays, skates, and chimaeras). He earned his B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from the Universidad de la República, focusing his research on shark biodiversity, bycatch in industrial pelagic longline fisheries, life history and reproductive biology, and spatial ecology using both conventional and satellite tagging techniques.
Federico currently works as a researcher at the National Directorate of Aquatic Resources, where his work centers on the biodiversity, ecology, and conservation of chondrichthyans, as well as their bycatch and interactions with various fisheries. Additionally, he volunteers at the National Museum of Natural History in Montevideo, where he is responsible for curating and managing the chondrichthyan collection within the Ichthyology section.
He has extensive experience working aboard scientific research vessels, specializing in species identification and biological sampling of chondrichthyans captured using bottom trawls and drifting pelagic longlines. Although he collaborates with national scientific observers on bycatch monitoring of chondrichthyans in deep-water fisheries, the Exploration of Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems of the Continental Margin and Abyssal Plain of Uruguay will be his first dedicated deep-sea research cruise. He is eager to contribute to the discovery of new species and to help expand the known biodiversity of deep-water chondrichthyans in Uruguay.
