Caio Gonçalves is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Environmental Geochemistry at Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF), Brazil, supervised by Dr. Rut Díaz. He received his B.Sc. in Geology from the Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ) in 2016, and his M.Sc. in Environmental Geochemistry from UFF in 2019, where he worked with benthic foraminifera to reconstruct bottom-water oxygenation in the Western Equatorial Atlantic throughout the last glacial period. His current research focuses on sedimentary sulfur cycling, investigating how changes in local redox dynamics combined with global changes can substantially influence the composition, isotopy and speciation of different organic and inorganic sulfur compounds. He also displays a keen interest in oxygen-depleted environments, where extremophile microorganisms can not only survive but also flourish. Caio has significant familiarity with Elemental Analyzer and Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (EA-IRMS) analytical techniques, striving to enhance protocols for sulfur isotope analysis in marine sediment samples. He has prior experience from participating in another research cruise in December 2016, aboard the Vital de Oliveira vessel. The expedition was conducted under the jurisdiction of the Brazilian Navy, sailing 2,200 nautical miles along the Vitoria-Trindade Ridge in the Atlantic Ocean.
