Jackson Shields is a PhD candidate with the Australian Centre for Field Robotics at the University of Sydney. His research is focussed on improving the efficiency of AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) surveys, by using remotely-sensed data to predict where the AUV should sample. Concurrently he is developing simplified AUVs, designed to collect benthic imagery, while being cost-effective and easy to deploy. Prior to his PhD, he worked at an underwater robotics startup, working on machine learning and computer vision.
