Dr. Charlotte Seid is the manager of the Benthic Invertebrate Collection at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego. This collection holds preserved specimens from seafloor habitats around the world, with a focus on the deep sea and chemosynthesis-based ecosystems. The preserved specimens at Scripps are used to support biodiversity research, education, art, and outreach by collaborators around the world. Correct identification is the first step toward protecting biodiversity, and each year the collection enables the discovery, careful description, naming, and formal publication of many marine species that are entirely new to science. Dr. Seid has contributed to 17 peer-reviewed scientific publications, including the descriptions of 16 new species and a 250-page taxonomic inventory of invertebrates at methane seeps on the Pacific margin of Costa Rica. She has participated in 20 oceanographic cruises with more than 160 days at sea. She received her B.A. from Harvard College and her PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
