Robert Sutak is a biochemist and eukaryotic microbiologist who leads the Biometals and Drug Discovery Laboratory at the Biocev Centre, which is affiliated with Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. His main area of expertise is iron homeostasis in organisms including yeasts, human disease models, and parasitic protozoa. He has a longstanding interest in understanding the molecular mechanisms used by marine eukaryotic phytoplankton to survive in ocean environments where iron levels are extremely low in vast areas, despite it being an essential nutrient for most cellular processes. He received his PhD from the Department of Parasitology at Charles University and subsequently completed postdoctoral fellowships at the Department of Pathology at the University of Sydney, Australia, and the Institut Jacques Monod, Paris, France.
