Philipp Pröts is an evolutionary morphologist and biologist. He received his BSc. and MSc. from University of Vienna. During his Master’s study he worked with marine bryozoans and after graduating he started his PhD by joining the “shallow waters symbiosis” lab of Jörg Ott at the University of Vienna. Philipp currently works on the morphology and biology of symbiotic marine nematodes. His research interests focus on the evolution of morphology and the understanding of potential parallel reorganizations of morphological structures in both closely and distantly related nematode taxa. His main skills concentrate on several microscopical techniques and computer-assisted visualization of morphological data. He is also passionate about open science to make science accessible to everyone regardless of their monetary possibilities. This includes finding computational workflows using free and open source software to answer scientific questions in a serious manner. Philipp is author/co-author of three publications on the evolution of morphology and the taxonomy of small marine invertebrates. On his first cruise he will support the team by performing microscopy tasks.
