Olívia Pereira is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI). Olívia is originally from Brazil, where she got a BSc in Oceanography at the University of São Paulo. She went on to pursue her MS and PhD at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, before joining MBARI in January 2025. Her research has largely focused on chemosynthetic ecosystems including mainly methane seeps and organics falls, studying ecology, connectivity, and environmental drivers of benthic biodiversity to inform deep-sea conservation efforts. Olívia also has an interest in understanding how people perceive the deep sea and the human connections to the deep sea. She’s also passionate about science communication, and in her efforts mainly through social media, she shares the news from the deep-sea science world, her research, and life as a scientist, trying to bring the deep sea to the public.
