Melina Scian is a PhD student at the Laboratorio de Zooplancton Marino, within the Departamento de Biodiversidad y Biología Experimental at the Facultad de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales, Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA). Her doctoral research focuses on the diversity, distribution, and biogeography of chaetognaths (Chaetognatha) in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean. She aims to identify species present in the region, estimate their abundances, and characterize population structure by analyzing size and maturity stages. Her work also involves comparing dominant species across different ecosystems, investigating species associations, and examining how environmental factors influence these patterns to define distinct biogeographic regions.
Melina holds a Licenciatura in Biological Sciences from UBA, and the upcoming Falkor (too) expedition, A Tale of Two Submarine Canyons, will be her first oceanographic research cruise. She looks forward to contributing to scientific knowledge and collaborating with an interdisciplinary team to explore how canyon bottom morphology, current dynamics, and water mass properties influence zooplankton distribution and diversity.
