Martín Rivarossa is a Ph.D. student at the Instituto de Investigaciones Marinas y Costeras (IIMyC-UNMDP-CONICET), developing his research at the Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero (INIDEP) in Mar del Plata, Argentina. He specializes in studying phytoplankton dynamics through their optical properties, combining in situ bio-optical measurements with satellite ocean color data to assess the spatial and temporal variability in highly productive marine ecosystems of the Southwestern Atlantic.
In addition, Martín investigates phytoplankton phenology, focusing on the timing and intensity of seasonal growth pulses and their relationship with environmental drivers. During the Falkor (too) expedition, “A Tale of Two Submarine Canyons, he collects water samples to estimate the absorption coefficients of phytoplankton communities and performs advanced optical measurements using hyperspectral radiometers to quantify water-leaving reflectance. By integrating these bio-optical data with satellite-derived ocean color products, he develops algorithms to identify and to study the spatial distribution and temporal dynamics of the main phytoplankton groups in the Argentine Sea.
CONICET has awarded Martín a Ph.D. fellowship and collaborates with national and international research groups working on phytoplankton ecology, bio-optics, and satellite oceanography.
He received his B.Sc. in Biology from the Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Museo of the Universidad Nacional de La Plata (UNLP, Argentina) and is currently pursuing his Ph.D. at IIMyC-UNMDP-CONICET under the supervision of Drs. Valeria Guinder and Marcelo Acha.
