Macarena Pérez is a PhD student at the University of Playa Ancha (Chile) under the supervision of Dr. Céline Lavergne. Her research focuses on determining the sources and processes that influence the release and transformation of mercury as an indicator of natural and anthropogenic events in south-central Chile using an interdisciplinary approach. In this expedition, she is interested in investigating the eruptive activity of the Chaitén volcano using multiple proxies such as mercury distribution and microbial diversity shifts.
Macarena obtained her degree in Geology at the Andrés Bello University (Chile) under the direction of Dr. Céline Lavergne. During this time, she participated in several field expeditions, mainly in the Aconcagua River basin (Central Chile) and collaborated with her supervisor’s ECOS-SUD project learning cutting edge techniques for mercury and mercury transformation rate measurement. The idea of joining the first research cruise of her career is very exciting for her and she is very glad to be able to contribute to both coring, biology and science outreach.
