Luke Chao is Associate Professor of Genetics at Harvard Medical School and Associate Investigator at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Chao obtained his B.S./M.S. from Brandeis University and his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. His group seeks to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying membrane shape. The Chao Lab applies an interdisciplinary approach integrating structural biology, biophysics, bioinformatics and physiology to investigate membrane remodeling and ultrastructure in mitochondria and bacteria.

Current directions in Luke’s research explore in situ molecular structure, with a focus on membrane specialization dependent on tissue type, organelle responsiveness to cell state, and morphological diversification across evolution. On the Falkor (too) expedition, Luke will be interested in imaging marine microbes to understand symbioses relevant for eukaryogenesis.
