Lucas holds a Bachelor’s degree in Oceanography and a Master’s degree in Environmental Science and Technology from the Universidade do Vale do Itajaí (UNIVALI), where he investigated the impacts of bottom trawling on deep-sea seascapes across different sedimentary basins along the Brazilian continental margin. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in the same program, focusing on the relationship between deep turbulent currents and deep-sea corals, as well as the spatial heterogeneity of seascapes in the Romanche Fracture Zone, Equatorial Atlantic. His research applies quantitative approaches to analyze seascape patterns along longitudinal gradients and fracture zone slope walls. His expertise includes deep-sea oceanography, marine geomorphology, seascape ecology, spatial analysis, lagrangian modeling, habitat suitability modeling, and the assessment of bottom-trawl fishing impacts on benthic ecosystems. He also has experience in the planning of scientific cruises and in the development of seabed imaging systems, including towed sleds and tow-camera platforms. Lucas has contributed to projects related to demersal fisheries management, sedimentary carbon dioxide emissions associated with bottom trawling, and geospatial analyses within the iAtlantic project, particularly involving seascape and habitat suitability models for deep-sea corals and shrimps.
