Fascinated by nature since childhood, Juan Pablo Lozoya Azcárate is passionate about the sea and its coasts, outdoor life, and the exploration of remote areas. He is deeply interested in the interactions between human activities and natural ecosystems, and in his quest to understand them, he aims to generate relevant knowledge for their care, protection, and more sustainable management. He has onboard experience both as a scientific observer in fisheries of the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean (1998–2006) and in research campaigns in the Mediterranean Sea (including a dive in the submersible JAGO-GEOMAR, BO García del Cid 2010) and the Antarctic Peninsula (BIO Hespérides 2020). He is an Associate Professor at the Interdisciplinary Department of Coastal and Marine Systems at the Centro Universitario Regional del Este (CURE- Universidad de la República). He holds a degree in Biological Sciences (UdelaR 2002), a Master’s in Biological Sciences/Ecology (UdelaR 2006), a Master’s in Marine Sciences: Oceanography and Marine Environmental Management (Polytechnic University of Catalonia 2006), and a PhD in Marine Sciences (UPC 2012). Since 2015, he has been part of and co-coordinates a research team at CURE focused on plastic and microplastic pollution in aquatic systems, including research in Antarctica since 2016.
