Angel Perez has a bachelor degree in Oceanography, a MSc degree in Biological Oceanography (Federal University of Rio Grande University – Brazil) and a PhD in Marine Biology (Dalhousie University – Canada). Since 1995 is a Professor at University of “Vale do Itajaí”, southern Brazil, acting in the Oceanography Program. Angel started his research career as a cephalopod and fish population biologist, leading for 10 years (2000 – 2009) a national deep-sea fisheries research and management program. In 2006 he expanded his research interests to include diversity patterns and ecology of deep-sea environments of the South Atlantic. He acted until 2010 as chair of a Census of Marine Life spin-off project, “South Atlantic MAR-ECO”, conducting deep biodiversity studies along the southern Mid-Atlantic ridge and Walvis Ridge. In 2013 he participated of the Brazil-Japan scientific consortium that explored deep ecosystems of the Rio Grande Rise and São Paulo Ridge with the manned submersible Shinkai 6500. Between 2018 and 2024, was a member of the consortium iAtlantic: Integrated Assessment of Atlantic Marine Ecosystems in Space and Time (EC – H2020) acting as SW Atlantic regional coordinator. Angel published over 20 papers on deep-sea biodiversity, ecology and fisheries, and participated in consultation process for development of the FAO International Guidelines for Management of Deep-sea fisheries in the High Seas and the Strategic Management Plan for the Atlantic (SEMPIA).
