Jeremy Horowitz is a Peter Buck Postdoctoral Fellow at the Smithsonian Institution, National Museum of Natural History. He studies the taxonomy and evolutionary history of black corals (Anthozoa: Antipatharia). Specifically, Jeremy is extracting and sequencing DNA from holotype specimens (the actual specimens from which species were described) and topotype specimens (specimens physically matching holotypes that are collected from holotype locations) using next generation sequencing techniques to revise the entire coral order.
On the upcoming cruise Jeremy is excited to learn about and assist with the various reactive oxygen species experiments. He is also excited to collect black coral species that were described from the region that lack holotype specimens, to continue filling species gaps in his phylogenetic ‘tree of types’.
