My name is Gabriela Maurício de Alencar Filgueiras, and I am a fifth-year undergraduate student in Oceanography at the Oceanographic Institute of the University of São Paulo (IOUSP), Brazil. Since my first year, I have been a member of the Deep-Sea Laboratory (LAMP) at IOUSP, under the supervision of Prof. Paulo Sumida, where I have dedicated my research to the taxonomy, biodiversity, and ecology of deep-sea invertebrates, particularly crustaceans. Throughout my undergraduate studies, I have participated in national and international research projects investigating deep-sea ecosystems in the Atlantic and Southern Oceans. My work has included image-based characterization of benthic communities using ROV surveys, sediment processing, macrofaunal identification, and taxonomic studies of crustaceans, especially Peracarida. I also participated in the Brazilian Antarctic Program, aboard the Polar Ship Almirante Maximiano, where I studied whale-fall communities and Antarctic benthic fauna. In 2025, I received a scholarship from the University of São Paulo to complete a six-month research exchange at the Second Institute of Oceanography (SIO), China, under the supervision of Prof. Yadong Zhou. During my stay, I expanded my expertise in molecular biology, bioinformatics, and amphipod taxonomy through the study of amphipods collected from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. I also contributed to comparative research on hydrothermal vent communities from the Southwest Indian Ridge and Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Currently, my research integrates taxonomy, biogeography, and molecular approaches to investigate deep-sea amphipod diversity. I am also a member of the IUCN Red List team for endemic hydrothermal vent marine invertebrates through the Senckenberg Ocean Species Alliance. My interests focus on deep-sea biodiversity, chemosynthetic ecosystems, and crustacean evolution and distribution.
