Florencia Matusevich is a PhD student at the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET) at the Laboratorio de Biotaxonomía Morfológica y Molecular de Peces of the Instituto de Investigaciones Marinas y Costeras of the University of Mar del Plata (IIMYC-UNMdP), in Mar del Plata, Argentina. Her research focuses on the taxonomy and philogenetic relationships of a skate genus found only in the South America region, particularly studying the species found in the Southwest Atlantic Ocean. She has also participated in courses and studies related to barcoding, reproduction and embryological development.
Her graduate thesis focused on the biodiversity and oviposition areas of oviparous chondrichthyans in the Marine Protective Area Namuncurá – Burdwood Bank, found south of the Malvinas Islands.
She is currently doing her PhD in Biological Sciences at the University of Mar del Plata with a fellowship granted by the CONICET. Her work aims to find molecular and morphological markers that facilitate species identification and also intends to understand how this particular genus evolved.
