Born and raised in Hawai’i, Eric Shimabukuro has overcome his childhood fear of the ocean and embraced the immersive worlds of environmental and oceanographic science. He will graduate from the University of Hawai’i this summer with a degree in global environmental science (GES), a program that he highly recommends to any incoming freshmen seeking a very rewarding undergraduate experience.
Part of the GES program involves researching a senior thesis, and for this, Eric is working with Dr. Jim Potemra on applying the nearshore wave model SWAN to estimate wave energy in islands and atolls across the Pacific. With only one other brief cruise under his belt, Eric is very excited to be coming aboard Falkor, working with some of the best people that SOEST and SOI have to offer!
