Dr. Eric Firing is an oceanographer interested in the structure and dynamics of ocean currents and flow on all scales, from the global circulation down through waves and turbulence to mixing. He works primarily with current profiling instrumentation. The complex system of zonal currents below the thermocline at low latitudes has been a central interest, but he has also worked in middle and high latitudes.
Dr. Firing received his PhD. in 1978 from the MIT-WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography. After a JISAO post-doctoral position at the University of Washington, he moved to the University of Hawaii where he is now a Professor. He has frequently taught introductory graduate courses in physical oceanography and geophysical fluid dynamics.
