Originally hailing from Chicago, Emily now resides on the central coast of California as a Research Engineering Technician in Kakani Katija’s MBARI Bioinspiration Lab. She supports the design and deployment of imaging systems that digitally capture ocean animals. She integrates machine learning and science communication by managing data and producing multimedia content for FathomNet programs, particularly the FathomVerse video game. As a technical coordinator for imaging system development, she bridges communication between engineers and researchers. She worked previously with the Biogeochemical Argo program at MBARI, the fishes collections at the Field Museum of Natural History, and in environmental journalism with Mongabay. She holds a Master of Science degree in Marine Ecosystem Management from the University of St Andrews where she studied Antarctic deep scattering layer ecology and a Bachelor’s in Biology and Studio Art from College of Charleston in South Carolina.
